Bear / Livestock Conflicts
As the summer rolls on, APHIS personnel are working overtime dealing with bear / livestock conflicts. Some have used up their monthly comp/time and had to take mandated time off. All the while the bears continue to attack livestock. In 1992, Amendment 10 was passed by the voters of Colorado. It was a ban on the spring bear hunting, and the use of hounds and baiting as tools to help control the bear population. Amendment 10 is a statutory amendment, not constitutional; therefore the Colorado General Assembly can amend it. There needs to be an open dialog with in the Assembly as to what can be done to curtail the ever increasing bear / human conflicts. Ballot Box Biology ties the hands of our professional wildlife manager’s ability to help control conflicts.
In an attempt to mitigate bear conflicts, the Governor and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is announcing the 2023 funding recipients for the Human-Bear Conflict Reduction Community Grant.
