Governor Polis Vetos Bi-partisan 10 (j) Bill SB 256

With Livestock and ranch dogs being killed by Canadian Gray Wolves migrating into Colorado from Wyoming, The livestock producers pushed for legislation to protect their livestock and working dogs. A bipartisan bill was drafted and introduced. SB23-256. “The bill prohibits the introduction of gray wolves into an area if the United States secretary of the interior has not made a final determination as to whether the gray wolf population in the area is experimental, which gives the state greater flexibility to manage the wolves”. A 10 (j) ruling would allow ranchers and farmers to protect their livestock from depredating wolves. This bi-partisan bill was a major step in protecting the livestock industry. The bill passed in both houses of the assembly and went on to the Governor for his signature. Polis had threatened to veto the bill during the last days of the session. He waited till the session was over, and then vetoed the bill claiming it wasn’t necessary. He must think he knows better than our elected officials that represent us. (news release)
